Book Published

This weekend my book gets published: Building Websites with ExpressionEngine 1.6. Weighing in at 396 pages, the book is aimed at new users of ExpressionEngine who are looking for a structured path they can follow to quickly become adept at using ExpressionEngine. The book is being published by Packt Publishing, based out of Birmingham and Mumbai and should soon be available on sites like Packtpub and Amazon as well as at lots of other retailers (Polyteknisk in Denmark, Barnes & Noble in the USA, Librarie Ellipse in Switzerland, Bookware in Australia, Hoepli Milan in Italy and certain Borders bookstores in California, New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Austin and Seattle). If you’re a new user of ExpressionEngine, this book was written for you (really, it was!). If you’ve never heard of ExpressionEngine and you have no interest in building a website using ExpressionEngine, you might find a different title more to your liking.

Thank-you to everyone who put up with me while writing this book, including the staff at Packt Publishing, the technical reviewer (Mark Bowen), my wife, family, friends, the people I work with and of course, EllisLab for making ExpressionEngine in the first place and continuing to make it the great product it is today.

Unconditional Permanent Residency

Leonard finally got his unconditional permanent resident card, 15 months after applying. It’s a bit of plastic with my name, country of birth, photo, fingerprint and on the back, a hologram. I also got a lovely leaflet called “Welcome to the United States - A Guide for New Immigrants”, a mere 4 years after I first moved here. Read the brochure online at the USCIS website.

Ethan has died

Ethan, one of our favourite rats, died last week Friday (22-Feb). He was one of the friendliest and best-behaved rats we’ve ever had; he knew his name and came when called, he loved to climb and explore but was never interested in escaping. His favourite activity was to take all the food in the food dish and hide it from his two brothers; his favourite food was pasta. He died peacefully of natural causes, still holding his favourite food. He is survived by Rupert.

Buddy back on bed rest

Buddy has been prescribed strict confinement and bed rest for 4 weeks and a 2 week course of steroids after he starting to experience problems with his rear legs again. (Last year he was diagnosed with presumed FCE after he lost the ability to walk and control bladder functions). Though in good spirits, he will definitely miss his walks.

Berbee Derby 2007

This Thanksgiving, rather than taking the day off to lounge around in our pyjama’s, Megan and I got up far too early to do the 5km Berbee Derby walk in temperatures that were far too cold (-5ºc). At least it was for charity…

Another New Car

This weekend we bought a new (used) car: a 2003 Volvo V40. Megan is very excited about being able to travel with Buddy in the boot instead of on the backseat and I am excited to get Megan’s car. The new car became necessary after our 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme got totalled on 12-Aug while parked outside our house.

Megan becomes a triathelete

This morning Megan competed against almost 4,000 other women in the Danskin 2007 Chicagoland sprint triathlon in Pleasant Prairie, WI. In 32°C/90°F weather, a heat index of 36°C/97°F and wind gusts up to 24mph, Megan swam 1/2 mile across a lake in a mere 23 minutes, then with barely time to pause for breath cycled 12 miles (the last 6 miles against the wind) before finally throwing her bike aside for a further 3 mile race around the lake. That would be an amazing lifetime accomplishment in itself, but shortly after her sprint across the final finish line, she was already talking about next year’s competition!

Spring Holidays

This year we took a spring holiday and visited the twin cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul (and Eagan) one weekend. Then we visited Chicago the next weekend, and flew from Chicago to New York City where we were able to go up tall buildings and see Chicago. It was great fun!
