Megan has accepted a long-term substitute placement in a 5th grade (Year 6) classroom on Madison’s north side. The assignment starts in November and lasts until March, and includes such treats as a field trip to Devil’s Lake and a colonial day.

Megan has accepted a summer school teaching job in the Madison Metropolitian School District. She’ll be teaching literacy to children just entering 1st grade (year 2). And, for an added challenge, she’s doing it as part of a community outreach program with Spanish-speaking students. Not so much ESL, but rather teaching Spanish and English literacy simultaneously. The job is every morning until the end of July; in the afternoons she’s still working at Sylvan.

Megan & Leonard were hit from behind at high speed on the Madison beltline, Friday evening. We were on our way to Shawna’s graduation, but spent the evening at Urgent Care instead. Though we drove away from the accident in one piece, it’s questionable whether the vehicle will be repaired or written-off.

Yesterday I received my US Permanent Residency (green card), entitling me to stay and work in the USA as a resident until February 2007. I’m also now able to leave the country for a short period of time and return without losing my immigration status. Finally, I’m registered for the selective service, which means I can get called up to fight should the draft ever be reinstated. Can I vote? No! In 2007, we will have to apply to remove the conditions on my residency in order to allow me to stay in the USA on a permanent basis (this will require proving that we are still married in good faith).

On 13 January, Leonard was recommended for an adjustment of status to a conditional permanent resident of the USA by the USCIS in Milwaukee, pending security checks. I should get my approval notice in 30-60 days, and my green card in a further 30-60 days after that. After that, I’ll be entitled to leave the United States and return without losing my status, but for not more than 6 months at a time. The next step would be to become an unconditional permanent resident, but that won’t happen for another 2 years. In case you’re wondering, the ‘conditional’ part of conditional permanent residence is that we continue to be married in good faith.

I have another new job which I’ve accepted from December 13th. Since it’s in my field (System Administrator/Operator), I have resigned from my call centre job - my last day will be December 11th. I’m very excited about this new job, although we have to get a new (very old) car (courtesy of Erin) in order to get to work…

I have found a job, starting November 15th. Both of us saw the advert in different places at the same time on Monday, so I rang and had an interview on Wednesday where I had a typing test (72wpm) and then got offered the job. I will be working in a call centre, dealing with unhappy French-Canadian speaking customers (hopefully making them happy again). The job will be principally in French so it should prove fun…

The substitute teaching has finally picked up for Megan: for example she received two calls today. One was teaching grade 5 in Madison, and one was teaching high-school PE in Verona. Megan has also been specifically requested by a teacher she hasn’t worked for before, so her reputation must be preceding her.
We’re moving into a new apartment this weekend as well. We got the keys yesterday, and we’re slowly unpacking all our wedding gifts. It’s a really lovely apartment in western Madison, so much closer to where Megan works. It’s also in walking distance to many useful places: the supermarket, the mall, the gym, and Michael’s frozen custard (which is really just like ice cream). We’re both really excited - if you need our new address/telephone number please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Megan has her first substitute teaching job of the school year today, Friday 17 September. She’s received a call for the last 3 days which raises our hopes of being able to substitute teach more regularly (3 or more times each week). Meanwhile Leonard has a “skills assessment match” tomorrow for a company in Madison, following a telephone interview earlier in the week.

So we went to Milwaukee to get my fingerprints taken again. Apparently my last set of fingerprints were of insufficient quality and were rejected by the FBI. If this 2nd set is also of insufficient quality (which they probably are given that my fingers haven’t changed since August), then I will get asked to go to the local police department to get a set of fingerprints taken there. This is all to ensure that I’m not “sabotaging” my fingers (i.e. by burning or cutting them). Once that is done, I’ll be called to an interview with an officer from the Department of Homeland Security US Citizenship and Immigration Services in Milwaukee - brilliant.
